Last year we brought you “Tips, Tricks, and the Future for Forge Model Derivative Services.” We’re bringing even more goodies to this year’s presentation. Managing the metadata associated with your designs can be a confusing task. If you are using Vault software, the first step in the process is realizing that Vault Properties and Inventor software’s iProperties are actually different. Also, you have to understand the difference between a Vault system property and a Vault user-defined property. Once you understand all the different types of properties involved, how do you get them to work together? This class will guide you through the journey, from understanding the difference between iProperties versus Vault properties and Vault system properties and Vault user-defined properties. Then we will demonstrate how to create the proper mappings that will enable them to work seamlessly together. In the first part of this session, we will create an associative parametric model to introduce fundamental concepts that underpin computational design while exploring visual programming in Dynamo software. The model will be enhanced by parameters retrieved from AutoCAD software and Civil 3D objects. We will show how to organize and export a point cloud representing the landform and link into Civil 3D. There we will integrate this landform as a triangulated irregular network (TIN) model into the model of the existing environment and perform several analyses, including grading, stormwater, and cut/fill balance. Based on this analysis, we will optimize the parametric model. As the model is dynamically linked, we can check the improvement immediately in Civil 3D and iterate the process easily. We will also show how to use Dynamo to link landforms created by designers as NURBS with TIN surfaces that engineers can use.

In this session, we will look at how Advance Steel software has its own dedicated file management and creation process and how this can be adjusted to reflect the needs of working with BIM 360 documents, taking into account some changes required within the Advance Steel file-naming system and drawing-creation processes. We will cover how this local PC-based structure we typically see is replicated with a cloud model and the documents derived from that cloud-based model. We will then move into tracking the versions of the model and using the comparison tool in BIM 360 software to show differences and changes within the model. We will also monitor the progress of the model through the different versions.

The first ever "BIM in Construction" competition for World Skills was held at the national level in Ireland, hosted by the Technological University Dublin in June 2018. This competition was designed to draw out the students’ knowledge, understanding, and ability to construct an intelligent model to be used by a multidisciplinary team for a building design, tender, construction, and operation. The competitors worked to industry standards and used the BIM 360 cloud server to host their models. This competition had a set of 11 assessed deliverables to test their skills both in graphic modeling and information creation and coordination. Further national competitions were held in the United Kingdom, where the original framework was developed to test other core skills. Based on the success of these national competitions, the World Skills organization included a BIM (Building Information Modeling) competition in the Future Skills portfolio in Kazan, Russia, in 2019. This presentation will outline the development of the competition, report on the experience of the national competitions, and cover the amazing experience of the winners of the first World Skills BIM competition in Kazan. The presentation will show how third-level educational institutions can tailor their BIM education programs within their domain-specific courses so they can enter and be competitive in the national heats of World Skills BIM competition, and in turn respond to industry needs while improving students’ employment prospects.
